The smoke seems to be billowing alternately black and white as fresh areas ignite. The building's so hot and probably by now unstable that no-one can go in, so all they can do is spray water in and hope it eventually gets to the right area. They don't have a mobile ladder they could use to focus the water more, but they did knock holes in it at various locations with a backhoe.

Anyone know if the local fire service has breathing apparatus to go into smoke?

Fire seems confined to the upper floor, though obviously the ground floor and contents will be destroyed, by the water if nothing else. The building now has some pretty massive cracks, and the concrete is probably delaminating from the rebars. Quite dangerous to go near, and especially for the firefighters. No question that it will have to be demolished.

Yes, where were you Reaper when San Pedro needed you?!

Pedro 2 they have some old scott air packs .They are a nice bunch of guys !! but the equipment is not of the up to date stuff .. One old pumper , and one mini pumper not the best conditions to fight a big store fire.Remember this was a sleepy fishing village a few years back...It is what it is .This is a big fire for the guys who probably never seen lots of big working fire like this.Same thing happened when the island super market went up .

I was there about 15 minutes ago, and the back side of the building was still burning merrily through the gaping holes they punched through the second floor walls.

Plenty of water coming out too, so they're obviously pumping a ton of water in there, but that fire ain't out yet...

A friend tells me (and this of course is a friend of a friend deal) but that the workers smelled something when they were closing up and just thought it was the AC so they cut it off and left... anyone hear anything different?

Sad.

Thanks for the continued updates.

Aha, so begin the stories....

It's always interesting to hear the theories.

We just ran down and dropped off a few cases of water for the police and fire depts. Poor fellows - it is hot, grimy, smelly, noxious work out there.

Let's pray that they all remain safe and that no other structures are impacted.
